Temporary housing has always involved more than finding a home or apartment at the right price.
But, for global mobility teams, the real decision is considerably more complex.
Daily rate matters, but so do location, length of stay, flexibility, employee experience, service, risk and the total cost of an assignment. The best temporary housing solution on paper is not always the best option for the program—or the person who will actually call it home.
Yet evaluating all of those factors together can still be surprisingly difficult.
Information lives across emails, spreadsheets, systems and providers. Options may be presented differently. Costs aren’t always structured in ways that make comparisons simple. And as mobility programs become increasingly global and complex, the amount of information teams are expected to assess is only growing.
That raises a bigger question: what should temporary housing deliver next?
There will always be pressure to manage costs, and rightly so. But optimizing a temporary housing program requires understanding what those costs actually represent.
A lower daily rate can become less compelling when an apartment is farther from the employee’s workplace, requires additional transportation, offers less flexibility or creates more administrative work for the mobility team. Conversely, an option with a higher rate may ultimately provide greater value when the full picture is considered.
The opportunity is not to make price less important. It’s to make better context available around it.
Imagine being able to evaluate housing options based not only on what they cost per night, but on how well they meet the priorities of a particular assignment, employee and mobility program.
That’s where the conversation becomes much more interesting.
Global Mobility teams aren’t suffering from a lack of information. In many cases, they have more of it than ever.
The challenge is turning that information into something useful.
Technology has transformed nearly every part of the business travel and mobility experience by making complex decisions easier to understand and act on. Temporary housing should be no different.
What if comparing options were simpler?
What if total costs were clearer from the beginning?
What if global mobility teams had greater visibility across their programs without having to assemble the picture themselves?
And what if technology could help surface the information that matters most for a particular decision rather than simply presenting more data?
The future shouldn’t be about adding another system to manage. It should be about reducing complexity.
There is another important part of this conversation: technology alone isn’t the answer.
Temporary housing is inherently human. Assignments change. Employees have individual needs. Markets behave differently. Inventory shifts. Unexpected circumstances arise, and sometimes the best solution requires judgment, creativity and relationships that no algorithm can replicate.
The most valuable technology should strengthen that expertise, not replace it.
It should give mobility professionals better visibility and stronger decision support while allowing experienced people to focus on the situations where their knowledge matters most.
That combination—better technology enhanced by a human touch—has the potential to make temporary housing more transparent, more strategic, more comfortable, and ultimately easier for everyone involved.
The temporary housing industry has an opportunity to rethink what a great experience looks like, not just for the employee staying in an apartment, but for the mobility professionals managing the process behind the scenes.
Better comparisons. Clearer total costs. Greater program visibility. Smarter decision support. Fewer disconnected steps.
Those are the starting points. But more interesting ideas may come from the people navigating these challenges every day—the people we serve, stay after stay.
And we’re listening.
