The 4 Best Beaches Near Jersey City

COVID-19 may have rendered this summer a little different than usual, but there’s one familiar place you can still escape to and give yourself a sense of normalcy: the beach. Beaches in the Jersey City area are open, and they’re a great way to safely enjoy some fun in the sun. Whether you’re in the mood for relaxation or exploration, here are our favorite Jersey City beaches.

Point Pleasant Beach (near Jersey City)

Great for families, Point Pleasant Beach is about a 60-90 minute drive south of Jersey City and has something for everyone. The beaches are clean and spacious, so there’s plenty of room for social distancing. Spread out and pack your oversize towels, snacks and a cooler for a peaceful day by the water.

Stay for a little or a while in Jersey City with short-term furnished apartment rentals.

When you’re not lounging beachside, cruise down Jenkinson’s Boardwalk full of great food, rides, games, a sweets shop and even an aquarium. Visit on a Thursday and stay for fireworks at nighttime!

Belmar Beach (near Jersey City)

Take in panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean at Monmouth County’s Belmar Beach, also about a 60-90 minute drive from Jersey City. The beach and boardwalk are open year-round. Summer is a great time to swim, relax in the sun, fish, surf, boogie board and kayak on the sandy white beach. Any time of year is great for a stroll on the beautifully landscaped boardwalk, which is over a mile long. Every summer, Belmar Beach also hosts the annual New Jersey Sandcastle Contest, a fun spectacle for the whole family.

Asbury Park

Known for its alternative music scene as well as its beach and boardwalk, Asbury Park hits all the right notes. This beach is an hour’s drive away from Jersey City. Sun and surf the day away on the lifeguard-protected beach, then catch summertime fireworks at night.

There’s so much fun to be had in Asbury Park off the sand, too. The boardwalk boasts a mix of New Jersey oceanside classics, such as oysters, sausages and Italian ice, as well as more atypical fare, like Korean fusion tacos. You’ll also find a surf and swimwear shop, handcrafted goods and vintage-inspired gifts. Play antique pinball machines at the Silver Ball Museum Arcade, challenge your friends to a game of mini golf at the Asbury Eighteen or let the kids get soaked at the Asbury Splash Park. Right on Ocean Avenue, see a concert at the famous Stone Pony or Paramount Theatre.

Sandy Hook National Seashore

Another New Jersey beach favorite and an hour’s drive from Jersey City, this park is ideal for a weekend of outdoor adventures. It’s pet-friendly too! Enjoy a tour of the 250-year-old Sandy Hook Lighthouse or spend a day on one of their idyllic beaches. Go fishing, biking, hiking or even birdwatching in this terrific park.
