Classic Winter Activities to Do in New York City

There’s something fun to do every season in New York City, but when summer winds down and cool air comes back, it’s extra comforting to have fall and winter plans lined up. There are many things to do in NYC in the winter, so bundle up and grab a warm drink while checking out our top 3 cold weather activities in The Big Apple.

Ice Skating

NYC is the perfect place to enjoy the decades-long tradition of winter outdoor activities such as ice skating. In Manhattan, take a visit to The Rink at the iconic Rockefeller Center or glide among fewer in Bryant Park. The Rink at Rockefeller Center, now open, may be more appealing to visitors who wish to capture a picturesque moment, but Bryant Park’s option (opens October 31) is equally fun and unlike Rockefeller Center, free. For the largest and least touristy of ice skating rinks, visit Wollman Rink in Central Park. You can also secure VIP tickets to reduce wait times.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

You’ve seen the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade referenced in popular culture, but have you ever experienced the larger-than-life production in person? If not, it’s worth taking a look. If you don’t mind the crowds, this is one of the most iconic things to do in NYC in the winter! Go see your favorite characters super-sized and an array of renowned performers. Witness the parade from 77th Street and Central Park West to 34th Street along Sixth Avenue. Get there early to secure a viewing spot as the route fills up fast with onlookers.

Feeling Cozy with Warm Eats

Most hot beverages pair nicely with sweater weather, but New York City offerings can take your taste buds to the next level. The City Bakery on West 18th Street sells a famous hot chocolate that’s rich, indulgent and topped with a homemade marshmallow. For a solid treat, the pretzel croissant and assortment of cookies are popular choices year-round.

Comfort Food

With so many things to do in New York this winter, cozying up with comfort food is always a great option to beat the cold, and possibly the winter blues.. With close friends or loved ones, do a little research on the city’s best soup spots, dumpling joints, happy hour bars and so forth—even better, how about soup dumplings? Joe’s Shanghai in Chinatown arguably has the best soup dumplings around. The only caveat is that it’s cash only, but once you take a bite of these mouth-watering pieces of heaven, you won’t care so much. The scallion pancakes at Joe’s Shanghai are another warm, decadent treat that’s perfect for chilly weather.
