Jersey City Bars and Restaurants

Every workday when the clock strikes five (or when it’s five o’clock somewhere, at least), Americans flock to their favorite watering holes for the almighty Happy Hour. For those who are new to a city or on a business trip, attending local happy hours is a great way to let loose, meet people and perhaps find your regular haunt. We’re here to highlight some popular bars and restaurants in Jersey City offering killer happy hour specials and an enjoyable atmosphere.

The next time you’re in the mood for a cocktail or just don’t feel like going straight home after work, stop by one of these top happy hour bars in Jersey City.

This rustic Jersey City cocktail bar serves well-crafted drinks in a hunting-inspired atmosphere complete with brick walls, dark wood paneling, dim lighting and a mounted deer head. Come for their daily “Workman’s Comp” cocktail hour to sip on $5 house Pilsners and the $8 cocktails specials. Drinks include classics like a Manhattan or the crafty Bee’s Knees with Aviation Gin, lemon and honey. Small plates of gamey fare, like duck poutine or a venison cheesesteak, are also offered.

South House is where simple Southern meets Jersey City, bringing the flavors of Austin, Texas to the Garden State. This multi-floor establishment houses a dining area, bar area and patio section enclosed within the restaurant. High ceilings, exposed brick and vintage artwork create an impressive yet down-home vibe. Stop by during their “Happy Pour” for draft, canned and bottled beers all under $10, plus Southern non-alcoholic specialties like sweet tea or a classic Big Red cream soda. South House also offers an all-day happy hour every Monday.

Authentic Neopolitan-style pizzeria Porta is most known by its original Asbury Park, NJ location, but has been open in Jersey City as well since 2014. Long wooden tables, string lights and brick walls make you feel like you’re dining back in the Old Country. With a main floor below a rooftop bar and kitchen, there’s always something going on in this Jersey City hotspot, and it seems like it’s always happy hour.

Porta’s regular weekday happy hour offers $5 craft beers, $6 tap wine and $7 specialty cocktails, with each night having additional specials and attractions such as live music, karaoke and trivia. Visit on a Monday for Industry Night, an all-night happy hour from 4pm to close, plus live bands and DJs.

Tropical-themed bars serving tiki-style cocktails may have a reputation for being corny, but funky Jersey City basement bar Cellar335 boasts 4.5 and 5-star reviews on Yelp, Facebook, Google and TripAdvisor. As one Yelp reviewer puts it: “From the ambiance to the drinks to the food to the service, all five stars. Been around lots of places like this but this place does it well, really well, for the right price.” Join them Tuesdays through Fridays for their #LetsLuau Happy Hour, where all specialty cocktails, well drinks, beers and wine are $2 off.
