Best Wineries on Long Island

Long Island, New York: the land of multi-million dollar Hamptons homes, more highways than you can name, picturesque beaches and…wine country? That’s right — Long Island’s North Fork, a 30-mile-long peninsula on the northeast part of the island, is home to some 38 wineries and 3,000 acres of planted vineyards. For those living in the greater New York City area, a visit to Long Island’s wine country makes for the perfect weekend getaway or even a day trip, especially as the warmer months approach. The only question is which North Fork wineries to visit.

Grab your wine tasting buddies, hop in a car and head to one of these five best North Fork wineries on a sunny weekend this spring or summer.

1. Macari Vineyards

At this family-owned, 500-acre waterfront winery and farm, $30 gets you a tasting of five featured wines overlooking the scenic North Fork vineyards. On select days, pair your wine with a wood-fired brick oven pizza from the Avelino food truck, often parked on the estate. Animal lovers will also appreciate being greeted by the horses, Texas Longhorn cattle, ducks, rabbits and Spanish goats that live on the property.

2. Jamesport Vineyards

Jamesport Vineyards’ 19th-century tasting barn is just under two hours from New York City. On sunny weekends, vino lovers spread out on the great lawn to enjoy tasty wine, live music and light bites. Stick with their signature tasting flight, do a tour of the entire North Fork winery or even book a room on the property and stay overnight.

3. Paumanok Vineyards

The quaint Paumanok Vineyards in Long Island are known for their high-quality wines and numerous awards, including Winery of the Year at the New York Wine & Food Classic in 2004 and 2015. The North Fork estate consists of a renovated turn-of-the-century barn, a fermentation room and lab, a spacious tasting room, a barrel cellar and an outdoor deck overlooking the vineyards. Several tours are also available, including an in-depth tour led by one of the owners.

4. Bedell Cellars

Since owners Kip and Susan Bedell planted their first grapevines on the property in 1980, Bedell Cellars has been widely regarded as the benchmark winery of not just the North Fork of Long Island, but the entire northeastern United States. Reservations are recommended for a spot in the 1919-built farmhouse tasting room, named one of the top 25 tasting rooms in America by Wine Enthusiast magazine. Walk-in visitors are welcome to buy a bottle to enjoy with a picnic meal on the outdoor pavilion.
