STAMFORD, CT
"The City That Works!" Stamford is an economically sound community and continues to pursue appropriate economic development initiatives to both attract and retain companies and corporations. Stamford is conveniently situated near the southwestern point of Connecticut. Bordered on the north by Pound Ridge, New York, to the south by the Long Island Sound, by Greenwich to the west, and both Darien and New Canaan to the east. Stamford is just a short 44 minute Metro-North train ride to New York City’s Grand Central Station.
The city enjoys both urban and suburban characteristics, ranging from upscale housing areas, to a splendid corporate downtown center, to areas of beautiful shoreline with parks and beaches. By the end of the twentieth century, it had also become the nation's third largest corporate headquarters community. Stamford is Connecticut’s fifth largest city and is home to many Fortune 500 companies as well as many research centers.
Stamford is also very culturally diverse. Nearly 1 in 3 residents are foreign born and 42% of residents speak a language other than English in their home. This mixed community makes for a diverse community filled with many ethnic restaurants as well as civic associates and recreational clubs.
The Arts
Stamford Center for the Arts is dedicated to being the region's premier destination for world-class entertainment, fostering outstanding educational and outreach programs and operating state-of-the-art facilities. Stamford Center for the Arts offers the best in live theatre, concerts, comedy and dance entertainment. The Center is also home to the recently renovated The Palace Theatre. Hailed as "Connecticut's Most Magnificent" when it opened in 1927, this 1580-seat vaudeville house was restored in 1983 for live theatre, concerts and art exhibitions in the Sackler Gallery. A recently completed Palace Improvement Project has enhanced The Palace Theatre with a larger stage, new dressing rooms, updated technical facilities, and improved services.
