NEW YORK CITY
Greenwich Village / West Village
Greenwich Village is a quaint section of Manhattan with a rich history of culture and entertainment. “The Village” as it’s known, is an inviting neighborhood offering a wide selection of restaurants, eclectic shops and cultural attractions. The charming tree lined streets are a respite from the tall buildings that dominate Manhattan’s skyline. Although “The Village” is now home to some of Manhattan’s most expensive real estate and is no longer the home to avant-garde writers, painters, sculptors and playwrights of the 1960’s, it is still home to many small stages and galleries where individual influence spreads nationwide. Home to New York University and Washington Square Park, Greenwich Village is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in The City.
The Arts
Perhaps no other place in the country is known for its art movement than the western part of Greenwich Village, aptly dubbed the “West Village.” Some say The Village was the birthplace of American Modern art and they may be right. Greenwich Village was a haven to artists and the bohemian lifestyle since the late 19th century and while the residents may be more upper-middle to upper class now, the vibe is still very eclectic and a top destination for all visitors to New York. The Village has dozens of small, but well established playhouses, including the oldest continuously running house, The Cherry Lane Theatre, which opened in 1924. There are also many galleries including the Grey Art Gallery, which houses a collection of contemporary fine art including one of the finest collections of American paintings from the 1940s to present. Curated by Jaquelynn Baas and organized by the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College, it is lesser known, but a wonderful find.
Dining
Greenwich Village is home to many great restaurants including Mario Battali’s Lupa and Babbo, as well as New York City staples like il Millinio, believed the be the best Italian Restaurant in the country, and The Gotham Bar and Grill, a known celebrity hangout. No matter what cuisine you desire The Village will certainly satisfy your palate.
Recreation
The Village abounds with things to do during your down time. Read a book in Washington Square Park, visit the homes of famous American poets like Edwin Arlington Robinson, Marianne Moore, Edna St. Vincent Millay and e. e. cummings, among others, or take a stroll down West 10th Street, considered the most beautiful block in the city. No matter how you like to relax Greenwich Village has something for everyone.
