NEW YORK CITY
Flatiron, Gramercy & Murray Hill
The Flatiron District is one of the most convenient areas in The City. Comprising three distinct neighborhoods, Gramercy, Murray Hill and Flatiron, it is conveniently located and a hub for getting around the island.
Home to the famous Flatiron Building (The Fuller Building, which was built in 1902, at the corner of 23rd Street and Fifth Avenue), the Flatiron moniker is fairly recent. As the area grew in popularity, restaurants and bars replaced the toy and small clothing manufacturers that had dominated this section of town since the early 1900’s. Today Flatiron is an extremely popular residential neighborhood with many parks, schools, houses of worship, museums galleries, fine restaurants, casual eateries, bars, clubs and lounges. This is a city within The City.
Gramercy, sometimes known as Gramercy Park – is the enclave from the city located at East 20th Street and open to only the residents in the area (you must have a key to enter). However, this is much more than a Park. Gramercy is quintessential old New York. Tree lined streets are ruled with historic brownstones and a popular home to many New York socialites, politicians, actors and writers. Gramercy is also home to many of New York’s finest schools and restaurants and its proximity to the Park Avenue and Fifth Avenue business corridors make it an ideal place for business executives.
Murray Hill is one of New York’s most unique neighborhoods. It is home to huge housing complexes and hospital facilities while juxtaposed by quaint side streets dotted with 19th century brownstones. Due to its proximity to the United Nations many countries choose Murray Hill for their embassies and consulates; including South Africa and Mexico. Murray Hill is also in close proximity to Grand Central Station, making it a commuter’s paradise.
The Arts
As one of the oldest parts of the city, art is everywhere. From the cobblestone streets to the 18th century brownstones that line the side streets, The Flatiron District is an architectural experience to be seen. The area is also home to the Tamarind Art Gallery a major advocate of contemporary Indian art promoting the genre to a western and global audience.
Dining
Whether you prefer fine dining at The Capital Grille or Tuscan-inspired American fare at Cibo, the Flatiron District has something for everyone. This neighborhood, which is bustling during the day with business people and humming at night with residents looking for the next great place, Flatiron is always a great dining destination.
